The Deep Root Causes of Gilas Pilipinas Australia Brawl
September 14th, 2018 by Pinoyhoops
An ugly fight broke out during FIBA Asia Qualifier for 2019 basketball game between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia last several months. Two of the root causes of the rumble I concluded are Australia was afraid to be beaten again by underdogs like what happened in their last game against Japan and the other was Gilas sank into deep self-pity .Australia was shocked by their lost in the land of the rising sun and Gilas was fed up by Australia's large points advantage until the 3rd quarter part of the game.
Australia was haunted by the idea of losing again into a team that is not at the top level of FIBA arena like what they suffered in the hand of the Japanese cagers. They are still in shock and not yet recovered emotionally while playing with Gilas. Some of their players throw behavioral tantrums to their opponents to unload heavy baggage they incurred in their lost against Japan. Their ego was shattered in their previous fresh lost. Some of their players have not yet fully accepted their fate in Japan game.
Gilas drowns in steep self-misfortune. They feel so sorry they are behind largely in points. Australia added agony by playing intense physically and one of their players talking trash that for Gilas it seems a salt poured into an open wound. Gilas was so absorbed by their misfortune and Australia magnified it by sending wrong message playing roughly.
A sickening brawl occurs during a FIBA Asia game last July between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia. The root causes I summarized are Australia was scared to be defeated the second time by an underdogs or an upset and Gilas was mired in neurotic self-sadness. International basketball games should be played I think with utmost care. These games are televised around the world watched by fans especially children. This incident should be a lesson for both sides of Australia and Gilas. It is not far from a violent road rages shown on news TV's where one driver with a slight provocation coming from others dumps garbage (waving a dirty finger or throwing a curse word) into another and the other driver blindly accepts the garbage by retaliating and the "avoidable soon inevitably happens". We should bear in mind the teaching of the Good Book that says"do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
